Woodsmoke and Wool

Furnishing for the cooler months, when the house turns inward toward the fire.

✿

There is a moment each fall when the house changes shape. Doors stay closed, the porch goes quiet and life gathers around the warmest room. Preparing for that shift is one of the small rituals of country living.

Begin with the fireplace or stove. Have the chimney swept before the first fire, stack seasoned hardwood close at hand and keep a basket of kindling by the hearth. Oak and maple burn long and steady; birch catches quickly and smells wonderful.

Layer the textiles. Wool throws over the arms of chairs, a heavier rug laid over the summer one and lined curtains drawn at dusk make a surprising difference to how warm a room feels, without touching the thermostat.

Bring the light down. Overhead lights feel harsh on dark evenings; table lamps with warm bulbs and a few candles on the mantel make a room feel smaller in the best way.

Rearrange for conversation. Pull chairs closer to the fire, set a low table within reach of everyone and keep a stack of books and a deck of cards nearby. The goal is a room that invites people to stay a little longer.
